Song Sichuan Cuisine 宋 · 川菜 (Guangzhou, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Another short trip to Guangzhou was quickly drawing to a close. As we have time for one last meal before we took off for Guangzhou South Station (廣州南站), I made sure that this one counted.

Situated on the fourth floor of G.T. Land Plaza Winter (高德置地廣場 冬廣場) in Tianhe District (天河區), Song Sichuan Cuisine (宋 · 川菜) is a modern Sichuan restaurant known for both its traditional dishes and contemporary flair.

Their signature offerings include spicy boiled tiger grouper (沸騰老虎班), roasted 42-day Peking Duck (四十二天精飼北京烤鴨) and spicy crab, all of which could be in play for us this afternoon.

There is a separate kitchen that houses a dedicated wood fire for their Peking duck, a detail that underscored the care behind the dish.

Given that many of us prefer milder spice levels (or zero spice level), I fully expected a challenge navigating the menu this afternoon.


Sliced pork with garlic and chili (蒜泥白肉) (¥68) — A dish brimming with heat, with thin slices of fatty pork absorbing the chili oil beautifully.

The crispy skin arrived separated onto two plates, accompanied by cucumber, hawthorn jelly, sugar, scallion, and, intriguingly, garlic purée and peanut-infused hoisin sauce (both of which I haven't tried with my Peking duck before).

The skin was wonderfully smoky and aromatic.

It was incredibly satisfying to roll up the smoky skin with duck meat and condiments.

Stir-fried choy sum with garlic (蒜蓉菜心) (¥48) — A bright greens dish to balance the richness of the meat.

Even with a full house in the afternoon, the kitchen’s passion shone through in every dish. If anything, Song Sichuan Cuisine confirms its status as a standout, both for its cuisine and its stunning ambiance.
