B&T Patisserie Si Hai Cheng 四海城店 (Panyu, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

I didn't have a good night of sleep last night with little nugget breathing up my neck. Rather than sleeping in to catch up with my sleep, I decided to wake up early to explore more of Panyu (番禺) in the morning.

Our hotel was surrounded by several shopping malls, but we only had a chance to check out Panyu Tee Mall (番禺天河城) last night, so it was time to check the others off the list, starting with Si Hai Cheng (四海城) just across the street from where we were staying.

Unlike Tee Mall, Si Hai Cheng is more of a lifestyle hub, consisting mainly of bakery shops, restaurants, and cafés. There were some familiar names, like LAN一見嵐, which have popular outlets in different corners of Guangzhou, but I had already made up my mind about where to have my “sweet breakfast.”

Hidden on the B1 level of Si Hai Cheng, B&T Patisserie touts itself as an authentic French patisserie and bakery.

I headed straight to the display counter and, to my surprise, found a nice lineup of French-inspired cakes waiting for me to explore.

Lychee raspberry mousse cake (¥58) — The price caught me a little by surprise. I’d assumed things would be cheaper here in Guangzhou, especially in Panyu, but this cake was definitely pricier than most in Hong Kong.

Underneath the delicate layer of Chantilly cream and lychee mousse was a combination of fruity lychee-pear jelly, raspberry jam, and sponge cake.

I liked how the raspberry jam cut through the sweetness of the lychee mousse with a pleasant acidity, and the lychee-pear jelly added extra texture and freshness to the cake (with the diced pear in the middle). My only complaint was that the texture of the cake seemed a little too frosty (perhaps due to the temperature it was stored under).

Just as I was finishing up my dessert (or breakfast), I got a ping from my teammates saying that they were ready to check out. Sounds like my Me Time is about to expire.
