After heading out for a blood test on an empty stomach this morning, I found myself stuck in a much longer queue than expected. What I thought would be a quick errand stretched over an hour, and by the time I was done, I was racing against the clock to catch the tail end of breakfast service.
My original plan was to head over to Two Greens (兩草) on Minden Avenue — a spot I’ve recently grown quite fond of. But as I walked past Chrisly Café (華星冰室), the familiar tunes of classic Cantopop from Hong Kong’s golden age of showbiz spilled out onto the street. It struck a nostalgic chord, and just like that, my breakfast plans changed.
These traditional Hong Kong-style breakfast sets are what I grew up with, and hearing those timeless classics in the background made for a comforting walk down memory lane.
They passed the first test with flying colors. The iced milk tea (凍奶茶) was bold, aromatic, and instantly woke me up with the burst of caffeine. Just the way it should be.
Next came the scrambled eggs with ham (火腿炒蛋) and buttered toast. The eggs were perfectly runny, and the presentation showed that the kitchen staff cared about even the small details. A simple dish, done well.
The set also include a bowl of classic macaroni with barbecued pork (叉燒通粉), served in a light but flavorful broth. It was satisfying and spot on.
All in all, a solid breakfast that felt both familiar and heartwarming. I came in on a whim, but I’ll definitely be back. Next time, on purpose.
