Good authentic Portuguese dishes are very hard to come by in Hong Kong these days, especially in the heart of the city so expectations were high on what chef Michael Franco has in store for us at Mike's Chicken Comida de Portugal (咪走雞正宗葡國餐廳) tonight. I hope the dishes will be as authentic as the ones we had in Macau.
For those who have never been to Mike's Chicken Comida de Portugal, it's tucked away at a quiet corner inside Mira Place Two in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Dinner got off to a flying start thanks to these warm buns which were quite tasty to go with the special homemade garlic butter.
Traditional Portuguese salted cod potato fritters ($55) - A must for a Portuguese meal. These were pretty nice with a lovely crispy crust.
Deep fried calamari ($55) - Portion was quite generous. Love the light batter which worked well with lime dip.
Spaghetti Portuguesa ($95) - After two pretty tasty appetizers, things were about to regress. First up was Spaghetti Portuguesa, a pasta dish with chorizo, onion and mushrooms tossed in what they called a "rich tomato and herb sauce". But I thought the sauce was a little watery and honestly, I wasn't too sure about the "richness" of the sauce.
Portuguese "Arroz Gordo" ($95) - Another bizarre dish. According to the menu, it's a fried rice coming from a special family recipe of some sort, which had all kinds of different ingredients including chorizo, raisins, eggs, shallots and garlic.
Personally, I am not a fan of a lukewarm fried rice and this was a little cooler than lukewarm. Now whether it's meant to be lukewarm (or cold) or it's been sitting in the kitchen for a while, I wasn't entirely sure. But it certainly didn't get a pass from me, not with the temperature it was served at.
Piri Piri chicken / Portuguese roast garlic chicken ($195) - Their roast chickens are the stars here along with their suckling pig (which requires ordering in advance). I like the fact that they allow us to order two different flavors for a single spring chicken.
I thought both of the roast spring chickens were pretty decent. The one basted and grilled with garlic and piri piri pepper was seriously spicy but I like spicy so it worked for me just fine. For those who's less adventurous with spicy food, the Portuguese roast garlic chicken
in traditional Portuguese style is the one to go for.
Sawdust pudding - Pretty decent as well.
One thing that really stood out in tonight's dinner was the superb service. I thought the staff were trained well and they acquitted themselves nicely. However, in order to satisfy the local palates, some tinkering to some of these dishes are probably required.
