Tristar Kitchen 三星台菜食堂 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Tristar Kitchen (三星台菜食堂), a chain of Taiwanese style noodle soup opened by a certain singer has been on my radar screen for quite some time. Obviously, it was never an attractive enough option for us to consider venturing over to their closest branch at Olympian City for a look. But since it’s a public holiday today and we got absolutely nothing to do, maybe just maybe today is the day.

It was a pretty small 15/16-seater (and just 2 tables that could accommodate 4) so we had to wait a while to get ourselves a table.

Braised Tristar beef noodle soup (紅燒三星麵) – A no-brainer for us. The three stars (or tristar) was of course referring to the deadly combination of beef shank, tendon and tripe.

I have to admit, this was pretty tasty. I was never a fan of Taiwanese style beef noodle cuz of their highly overrated and over-seasoned broth. It was often way too salty for my palate but I was caught a little surprised with this one which was light (not light in color though) and just flavorful enough for the flat noodles.

That was the good part. The bad? Well, they weren’t totally bad (I’m referring to the three stars) but I’ve had better beef shanks, tendon and tripe before. These were nothing to write home about.

Deep fried pork chop with noodle soup (台式炸排骨湯麵) – Turns out little nugget’s deep-fried pork cutlet noodle made a little more noisy. I didn’t get the chance to check out his noodles (cuz he finished them all by himself) but the thin pork cutlets were really addictive. I won’t mind having it again (and again).

This wasn’t a totally disappointing experience (based on the tristar beef noodle soup) but I have to really come up with a special reason to be back for a second visit.
