Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (London, UNITED KINGDOM) ★★★★☆

We got some promising news in early 2011 when Mandarin Oriental London announced that they would be bringing in Heston Blumenthal and Daniel Boulud to create two new dining concepts. Yes, THE Heston Blumenthal. That's music to our ears.

But interestingly enough, Heston Blumenthal is not bringing along his molecular gastronomy that has made him one of the most influential chefs in the world. Instead, he brings a menu based on historical British dishes and re-interprets it using his famous artisan cooking techniques.

The kitchen is helmed by Ashley Palmer-Watts who has previously worked with Blumenthal since 1999. During our visit to Dinner, we could easily see him directing traffic in the open kitchen through the glass window.

The tables here are difficult to book unless you plan months ahead (like we did). But be sure to make a special request for a window seat with a view to the prestigious Hyde Park. You won't regret it !

The lunch set is a surprisingly affordable option at Dinner. It cost only £36 including three courses. That's a great bargain considering that we were talking about the No.12 best restaurant in the world (according to World's 50 Best Restaurant award).

Pig's ear ragoo
This was a dish I would expect from St. John but not here at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal.

Ultra thin pieces of pigs' ears along with anchovy, onions and parsley were served on a hot brown toast. The pigs' ears were super crunchy but I wasn't so sure if I wanted to finish the whole thing.

Luckily, it wasn't me who ordered this dish !!!

Roast Scallops
My starter was the roasted scallops with cucumber ketchup and borage. Apart from the nice presentation, the combination of scallops and cucumber was surprisingly refreshing.

The only blemish perhaps was the size of the scallops. Some of the pieces were very much on the light side.

Cod in cider
Our main courses started off with a cod fish served in cider alongside some chard and fired mussels. I enjoyed the extra flavor added to the cod fish from the cider.

Cured Salmon

Less impressive was the cured salmon with beetroot, sea aster and olive oil. The texture of the salmon was quite soft and kind of melt-in-your-mouth but it lacked a flavorful sauce to back it up.

A little pre-dessert while we waited for our tipsy cake.

Tipsy cake
At last, the dessert that we have been waiting for - the tipsy cake.

Well I thought it wasn't as good as advertised. The taste reminded me a bit of sponge cake with brandy. It was served with a nice slice of caramelized pineapple.
