The recent opening of Grill Manten-boshi (グリル滿天星) at Harbour City hasn't gone unnoticed by some of us who are desperately looking for new sparks in the local dining scene. Taking over the space previously occupied by BLT Burgers, one of my favorite burger joints in town, Grill Manten-boshi is a familiar name from Tokyo; in fact, we had the pleasure of checking them out in 2009 while we visited the Japanese capital, albeit not really impressed by its signature omelette rice dishes.
I did have a chance to sit down for a quick meal here while I was at the mall on a weekday last week but decided not to. Mistake? Today, it's completely full and we ended up waiting for almost an hour.
This is a pretty expensive meal for what we were getting, and I had doubts in my mind that people would come back for more omelette rice at this hefty price but that's just me thinking out loud.
Hamburg steak omelette rice with Grill Manten-Boshi gravy ($238) – I think they meant Hamburger steak not Hamburg steak but anyways, here's the signature dish of the restaurant. For $238, it's probably the most expensive omelette rice in town.
This is no ordinary omelette rice though. Founded in 1978 by Chef Yoshinao Kubota who is a protégé of Tokuzou Akiyama, chef to Emperor Shōwa, Grill Manten-Boshi brings the pedigree of an omelette rice that's probably served to the emperor many many times!
There were two different sauce served on this dish. The first was a more flavorful one especially made for the hamburger steak (made with meat and red wine I suppose?). The second one, a curry-based sauce which was more mild was used mainly for the silky-soft egg with prawns, scallop, green peas and curried rice underneath.
Pork cutlet curry omelette rice ($228) – Slightly disappointing was the deep-fried pork cutlet served with curry sauce and the same omelette rice. The pork cutlet, in particular, was a little bit dry (and rough).
This is a pretty expensive meal for what we were getting, and I had doubts in my mind that people would come back for more omelette rice at this hefty price but that's just me thinking out loud.
