Fischers Fritz (Berlin, GERMANY) ★★★★★

Regent Hotel Berlin is a 5-star hotel located right by the historic Gendarmenmarkt and close to some of the finest concert halls and cathedrals in the city. Apart from its rich history and centralized location, it also boasts one of the best hotel restaurant in Fischers Fritz.

Fischers Fritz is one of the three 2-star Michelin restaurants in Berlin (Unfortunately no 3-star restaurant in the city). But with the other two (Reinstoff and Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer) closed for holidays during our visit, Fischers Fritz became the one and only choice available for us.

Like Regent Berlin, Fischers Fritz is all about classic and charm. The wood-paneled dining room, Roman-style sculptures and upscale dining furniture all contribute to the classic and elegant atmosphere.

Unlike the decor, the cuisine here is anything but classical. Chef de cuisine Christian Lohse offers a modern cuisine that is innovative yet subtle.

Lunch started brillantly with an amuse bouche of smoked salmon sitting on a bed of apple slaw. It was perfectly executed in every way (7/10).

We continued with our first starter of the day which happened to be the house specialty here - Tartar of smoked eel. The combination of smoked eel with grammy smith apple jelly and horseradish was rich in flavor and refreshing (9/10).

I had the roasted Bresse pigeon with green asparagus from the a la carte menu. The Bresse pigeon was roasted to perfection and I really enjoyed its tenderness. But there was a natural gamey flavor that was desperately missing (6/10).

For main course, I made the mistake of picking the Iceland char fish. It was slightly over-cooked (5/10). Would definitely prefer it to be more 'raw' and not as dry.

The premium Duroc pork belly seemed to be a better choice for main course. The meat to fat content was absolutely perfect and it made quite a mouthwatering experience overall (7/10).

Finally we moved forward to dessert. The first to arrive was a mousse of Earl Grey tea and Tanariva milk chocolate with Granny Smith (again?) and egg nog ice cream being served separately.

I really liked the presentation here. Looked like a spring roll made with chocolate and earl grey tea mousse and it tasted even better than it looked (8/10).

The second dessert, pudding of passion fruit and star anise served with a warm foam of macadamia nuts was far less impressive. The passion fruit flavor was a bit too strong and sour that even the sweet macadamia foam failed to cover up (4/10).
