Peko Peko Eatery OP Mall (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

It's already been two years since I last visited Peko Peko Eatery at OP Mall. Last time I was here, I was bidding farewell to a former colleague of mine. Didn't realize that he has already returned to the beautiful British Columbia for two years now. Time flies~

I arrived exactly at around noon time and half of the tables were still available. I guess that wasn't a very good sign.

I was first started off with a cup of English Breakfast tea. Yeah, I haven't had my milk tea fix today. At least not yet.

It was immediately followed by a cup of sweet corn soup which was part of the lunch set. This was OK.

My main dish was honey glazed salmon fillet that came with a hint of miso. I really love the size of the fillet. In most places, this would come in two servings, for two separate customers I think.

I thought today's dishes were fairly decent but at $200, I fully expected them to be more than decent.

Some thoughts on dining in Hong Kong these days:
Lately, I have been giving some thoughts to the trend of Hongkongers ditching the local market to shop and dine in Shenzhen. Most people are simply pointing to the fact that things are a lot cheaper in the North but for me, that has never been the reason. Since the start of the pandemic, I saw a lot of restaurants folded in Hong Kong and even for those who survived, their service has gotten to a level that was no better than middling at best (rather than improving for survival!). It's almost like people have forgotten how to serve (perhaps cuz during the pandemic, most restaurants were only serving takeaways to keep business afloat). Take this meal as an example, after I finished the soup, the main course was served up but the waitress didn't bother to take away the empty bowl for my soup. And after I finally finished my salmon, many waiters/waitresses have passed me by but none was kind enough to empty the table for me so I could have more room to enjoy my tea. Last time I checked, this is the way they do business in cha chaan teng (local tea restaurant) but not at a proper restaurant. Have we forgotten how to serve in Hong Kong? That is my question. In Mainland China, you simply don't see these glaring mistakes of not knowing how to serve your customers right. That was really the main reason I minimized eating out locally.
