Modern China Restaurant 金滿庭京川滬菜館 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Our trip down memory lane took us to Modern China Restaurant (金滿庭京川滬菜館) at Olympian City over the weekend. It's a place Jelloman and I used to love dearly (still do). We used to come here all the time when we were dating (a decade ago?) so it was nice to finally come back with little nugget for our long overdue visit. To our pleasant surprise, we were able to get a table without any waiting time, something that's virtually impossible in recent memory before COVID-19.

Dumplings in chili oil (紅油抄手) ($69) - One of my favorite dish here and still is! The level of spiciness was perfect and there were enough prawns there for the lovely bouncy texture.

Fried meat dumplings (鍋貼) ($62) - Really juicy and the burst of flavors from the meat broth was pretty nice.

Jellyfish in sesame oil (蔥油海蜇) ($83) - Jelloman's favorite cold appetizer. I'm not much of a fan but I'll have to admit the fresh chives and sesame oil was nice.

Shandong style chicken (山東手撕雞) ($116) - Not a bad dish to wrap up the appetizer portion of our meal. The homemade spicy soy was very addictive, matching well with the sweetness of the chicken. There's a version with black truffle but I'll happily take one any time.

Dan Dan noodles in spicy sauce (招牌擔擔麵) ($49) - My favorite dish here even more so than the dumplings in chili oil. I've had a lot of dan dan noodles in Hong Kong but this was the only one that seems to find the perfect balance of spiciness and nutty flavors (from the peanut sauce). The noodles were a little weak today but still among the best I've seen in the city.

Fried noodles Shanghai-style (上海粗炒) ($103) - Very generous portion and pretty good "wok hei". My little one loves it~

Rose flavored braised spare ribs (花香玫瑰骨) ($118) - A bit like sweet and sour pork but there's a bit of floral fragrance in these spare ribs. Obviously, a signature dish here. Not bad.

Deep-fried souffle ball with red bean paste (高力豆沙) ($19 per piece) - The first time I introduce this dessert to my little one and he loves it! Egg white, red beans and a bit of banana in the middle; that was heavenly! And you know what's perfect about Modern China Restaurant's deep-fried souffle balls? You can order it pair! Other restaurants would have forced us to take half a dozen or four at least. For those who just want something sweet to end the meal.

Red bean paste pancake (豆沙鍋餅) ($62) - Decent but obviously, their souffle ball was the real deal here.

This is one of the few places that manage to hold its own through the last decade. The consistency shown from the kitchen was really well worth another visit.
