Fraser Residence Nankai Osaka (Osaka, JAPAN)

For years, I have explored the possibility of staying at an apartment hotel in Japan but the plan has never really come together until my most recent Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe trip. With mom and little guy traveling with us, it just made a lot of sense for us to stay in the same apartment so we can do a better job taking care of the both of them. Now, the question is where.

Finding a good apartment hotel in Osaka has never been easier thanks to third-party websites like Booking.com and Airbnb. On Booking.com alone, there was a listing of 488 apartment hotels (or aparthotels) but where should we start?

The first thing we'd consider was of course our budget. Can we afford this? Since we're looking for a 2-bedroom apartment, the rule of thumb was to first determine the amount of money I'm willing to pay for a hotel room (if you choose to have 2 hotel rooms instead). Then, multiple by 2 and that's our budget. The way I look at it, I'm getting the living room and kitchen free of charge.

The second criteria, almost as important as the budget is the location. There's a reason why we're staying at an aparthotel and it's generally because we have a relatively large group and likely, we're traveling with kids too. So, location is everything. I always give preference to a place near a subway station on the right subway line and it's a bonus if it's close to a mall with things to eat and buy without venturing miles away. Finding the right hotel is easy to be said than done, which is why I love Fraser Residence Nankai Osaka so much.

Conveniently located across the street from Namba Parks and Namba Station (one of the largest station interconnecting with multiple subway lines), Fraser Residence Nankai Osaka is just a short walk from a host of restaurants, coffee shops and breakfast spots. But if we're lazy like us, it's also not difficult to find happiness near the doorstep of the hotel without visiting the mall as McDonald's, Ippudo Ramen, Tenkaippin Namba 天下一品, and Brother's Cafe (Seriously good Japanese pancakes!) are all less than 100 metres away.

Wonder how close the hotel is to Namba Parks and Namba Station? We can actually see the tracks from our hotel room (Don't worry, the sound proof system was great!).

While Fraser Residence Nankai is not a luxury apartment by any standard, it's more than serviceable for any family traveling with kids and elderly. The living room is spacious giving my little nugget all the space he needs to run around.

The rooms are well-appointed. The master bedroom is particularly inviting.

Because of this incredible city view! Every 2 bedroom apartment here is a corner room so needless to say, it provides the best wide-angle view of Namba.

This is how it looks like in broad daylight.

The only blemish is perhaps the bathroom of the master bedroom. It looks really dated and could most definitely use a facelift.

The second bedroom comes with twin beds and as expected, a lot smaller and with a much lesser view.

There's a second bathroom accessible from the living room that is equipped with a shower room.

It's so easy to make a mess when you have kids around which is why it's so important that we have sufficient room for them (in our case, him). I can't imagine us living in a small yotel with my little one's toys, snacks and clothing around (Okay, not everything seen here belongs to him!).

Here's the small kitchen area where we prepared food for our little guy.

We had a couple of minor issues that required attention from the team. First, there was a foul smell coming out of the washing machine which they took care of the next morning. They also took a quick look at the air conditioner issue in the twin bed room and immediately reported back their findings in a note left at the dining table for us.

I think there's no question we would consider staying at Fraser Residence Nankai again for our next visit.
