Ristorante Il Cenacolo (Verona, ITALY) ★★★☆☆

Ristorante Il Cenacolo is a quiet little restaurant just off busy Piazza Bra behind pedestrian street Via Roma. From what I have read, their grilled meat and fish are really good and that's what put them on the map.

Verona gets really busy in the summer during the opera and of course, holiday season so finding a quiet and peaceful place for dinner is always a luxury. We were able to find that luxury right here at Ristorante Il Cenacolo.

Here's the grill that everybody has been talking about, right in the middle of the dining room like an open kitchen.

Homemade tortellini (of) Valeggio sautéed in sage butter sauce (10 euro) - Dinner got off to a flying start thanks to a couple of homemade pasta. The first to arrive was their Valeggio tortellini which was sautéed in sage butter sauce. It's one of the restaurant's many signature dishes and one that I could definitely relate to. The proportion of cheese and meat was right on the money while the parmesan and sage butter sauce provided the perfect icing on the cake.

Bigoli with Amatriciana sauce (12 euro) - I was really tempted to order their risotto with amarone wine which is another house specialty here but mom rejected the idea. So instead, we got ourselves another pasta. This was again very solid. The bigoli pasta was really firm to the bite (according to mom, it was a bit hard but it was perfect for me) and I thought it worked in harmony with the purple onion, tomato and cured pork cheek.

Veal in tuna sauce with fennel salad (14 euro) - Always enjoy a nice traditional vitello tonnato but I wish the thinly sliced veal could have a bit more tuna caper sauce on top. I like my vitello tonnato soaked with that richly flavored tuna sauce, kind of like they did it at Pici (to a point where you don't even see the slices of veal!).

Sea bass fillet with mixed vegetable salad and fresh tomato sauce (20 euro) - The branzino, our only dish from the grill, was really nicely done.

Too bad everyone was either too stuffed or sleepy to fully enjoy its lovely flavors.

Turkey fillet with grilled vegetables - A little something for my little one turned out to be huge. They ran out of chicken legs so they replaced it with a tender piece of turkey fillet. This was pretty nice too. Came with a bit of smoky flavors from the grill which I'm sure my kid would enjoy.

I was happy that we didn't go for a touristy restaurant on Piazza Bra and instead went with a quiet place like Ristorante Il Cenacolo. The food was seriously good and the most important part of all, it didn't cost us an arm and a leg.
