Bernachon (Lyon, FRANCE) ★★★☆☆

We are making our second stop this afternoon although this is very much a planned one unlike our previous stop at C Gastronomie La Boutique du Goût.

Bernachon is supposed to be a really big deal in Lyon. I read this from Two in France while I was doing my research for this trip so I knew I had to stop by here.

A visit to Lyon without stopping at Bernachon is like visiting the Louvre without seeing the Mona Lisa. Lyon has a long history of producing the best chocolatiers in the whole of France, and Bernachon must surely rank with the best.

Bernachon can be found in trendy 6th arrondissement. They have this elegant chocolaterie and patisserie in their boutique (left).....

.....and the tea salon just to its right.

The cafe and tea salon offers exactly what one might expect from it: sandwich, quiche and drinks like coffee and chocolate.

Maison Bernachon, Lyon - Food and drink menu

Did we miss anything?

Hot chocolate - Of course, I had to sample this hot chocolate to see how it stacks up against those from Laduree and Angelina. It was silky smooth and rich but a little bit on the bitter side.

Iced chocolate - Jelloman had the iced version and she thought it wasn't bad. At least she didn't find the chocolate flavor too bitter for her.

Le Président - This was what we came all the way here for, their signature pastry which was created by Maurice Bernachon for the 50th birthday of President Giscard d’Estaing back in the 1970s.

It's a genoise cake filled with chocolate ganache and brandied cherries made in the shape of a beautiful flower. Probably not my cup of tea but definitely one that's good to check off my list.
