Hugo & Victor (Seoul, SOUTH KOREA) ★★★☆☆

Hugo & Victor is another tip I got from my Korean blogger friend kosmose7 who I must say is an expert in French dining and I guess exquisite French pastries also count as part of his expertise too.

Created by Hugues Pouget, a former head patissier of Guy Savoy (and before that, Ladurée and Hotel Bristol with Éric Fréchon), this chocolatier, bakery and pastry shop opened its doors in Paris back in 2010 and just recently started to expand overseas. Their first outlet in Seoul opened last December at the Lotte Department Store (food hall) and has been an instant hit ever since.

Tartlets anyone!? (Lovely tart gift set @68,000)

Somehow I never seem to be able to find a decent tarte au citron anywhere in Seoul. Perhaps Hugo & Victor finally has the answer for me.

I love those crunchy meringues and they just made the lemon tart (₩6,800) look so much more adorable but somehow the taste just wasn't as nice as its look.

I thought this Jorge Amado (9,300) was much much better. Despite not being a fan of dark chocolate, I did find this combination of dark chocolate mousse, vanilla mousse, pecan nut, feuillentine praline and dark chocolate biscuit to be rather irresistible.

  1. Wow, compliments from a gourmet expert friend in Hong Kong! Thanks. :) Glad you tried H&V. I personally like their choux fraise but it won't be available for a few months since now is not the season for strawberries. There is another decent French patisserie called Gateaux De Voyage (http://blog.naver.com/kosmose7/220702504857) opened by a former pastry chef of Le Cordon Bleu Academy Korea. It is not exactly a place that blows you away, but it's decent enough to visit when you are near the Nonhyun-dong area.

    1. Thanks kosmose7. I will definitely check Gateaux De Voyage out later this year. Looking forward to seeing the first Michelin Guide for Korea before booking my tickets! haha...

    2. 唔該! Michelin Seoul is scheduled to be released on November 7. Shanghai Michelin list is also quite interesting! Lots of Hong Kong based restaurants received the stars!

    3. 정말 감사합니다.....
And thank you for the release date of the Seoul guide. I have been looking all over the place for it. Hope I have already covered some of these starred restaurants (Fingers crossed)!

The Shanghai guide was definitely interesting. Personally, I was a little disappointed with the small numbers of French/Modern European restaurants picked as the list was totally dominated by Chinese restaurants (surprisingly more Cantonese restaurants than Shanghaiese restaurants). Even more disappointing was the fact that they are mostly hotel restaurants...

Comparing to the Singapore guide, I like the Sing one a lot more...
