Bulgari il Ristorante (Tokyo, JAPAN) ★★★☆☆

Bulgari Il Ristorante is one of 14 Italian restaurants to receive a Michelin star in the 2015 Tokyo guide. Executive Chef Luca Fantin carries an impressive resume that includes stops at some of the world's most prestigious restaurants including Cracco (Milan), Mugaritz (San Sebastian), and Ryugin (Tokyo). He was most recently sous chef at the 3-star Michelin La Pergola in Rome before taking over the Executive Chef role at the Bulgari Ginza Tower in Tokyo 6 years ago. Chef Fantin's modern Italian cuisine is known to strike a perfect balance between taste and aesthetics and it promises to be an unforgettable experience for the palates.

The moment I stepped out of the elevator, I was already overwhelmed by the restaurant's inviting ambience highlighted by the super high ceiling and ceiling-to-floor windows.

I was really pumped up about this meal but first, some bread to get us started.

Amuse bouche consisted of some beautifully presented nibbles that started with these porcini mushrooms made with cheese and crumbs. Unfortunately, one of my "mushrooms" has fallen but went undetected by the staff.

A little more attractive was the next small bite, a bite-sized toast with smoked mackerel. The mackerel had very strong smoky flavors. Very nice.

We are still not finished with our amuse bouche and here's an array of small bites themed "variation of pumpkin". This includes some pumpkin chips with parmesan cheese and herbs, pumpkin gnocchi with parmesan cheese foam and last but not least, pumpkin purée served with some balsamic vinegar.

I was particularly drawn to this pumpkin purée. Two slices of pumpkin flavored meringue chips provided a slightly different bite to the mix.

After a fairly exciting set of amuse bouche, our first starter was ready to take centre stage. A lovely crab salad featuring the sweetest crab meat from Hokkaido, marinated apple and celeriac purée sent our taste buds into a frenzy. The sweetness of the Hokkaido crab meat was nicely complemented by a good balance of acidity from the pickled apple. A well thought dish without a question!

Next up was Gragnano spaghetti from Italy with shellfish in a sea water emulsion. I really liked the freshness of the clams, mussels and sea conch here. The spaghetti was fresh and had just the right bite but the sea water emulsion was a little too salty for my liking. Not a complete fail but a bit of mixed feeling for me on this one.

Our main course was Italian black pork served with potato variation and onion. Comparing to the previous pumpkin variation, this potato variation was a little off the mark but better was the slow-cooked pork which was perfectly matched with a spicy green mustard sauce. Not bad.

Dessert was just a simple coffee granita which was mixed with banana and topped by a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

With such a bright and airy dining room, we decided to just take things slowly while we enjoyed our cup of tea and petite fours.

Ginza is one of my favorite districts in all of Tokyo with some of the best restaurants and pastry shops available in the city. Sadly, we have a very tight schedule to follow and off to Odaiba (台場) we go.
