London House by Gordon Ramsay (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

We knew it was just a matter of time before Gordon Ramsay opens across the harbour. The only questions were when and what.

Following the success of his Bread Street Kitchen & Bar brand in Lan Kwai Fong, I was betting on the famed chef opening the same concept in Tsim Sha Tsui but when the smoke finally clears, it was gastropub concept London House getting the nod (It's a bit different version than what they have in London).

Like Bread Street Kitchen & Bar, London House is a project in collaboration between GR and local F&B giant Dining Concepts. The two-storey restaurant on the East Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront features a ground-floor bar with live band (I was told they will only be there on weekends but I could be wrong!) and a second-floor casual dining area serving modern British fare.

Barbecue chicken wings, blue cheese crumble ($108) - They have a very very small food menu so it's not like we had to spend half an hour deciding what to eat. First up was their BBQ chicken wings with a homemade barbecue sauce.

It wasn't love at first bite for me as the flavors were a little too strong for my liking. But as soon as I got used to it, I thought it was alright (6/10).

Sichuan pepper squid, coriander leaves, spring onion, spicy mayonnaise ($118) - A disappointing dish without a question. The portion was pretty small for the price they were charging and the seasoning was again way too overpowering (and I haven't even dipped it into the spicy mayo) (3/10).

Chicken caesar, pancetta, anchovies, soft-boiled egg, aged parmesan ($138) - After two relatively strong-flavored dishes, it was good to have a salad. This was not bad but definitely not as good as Jamie's Italian's chicken caesar (5/10).

Fish and chips, crushed peas and tartare sauce ($198) - This was the second best dish of the night. Nothing beats a good old beer battered deep fried fish fillet and look at that size! Humongous!

That was seriously good stuff. Very crispy on the outside while soft inside. And I love those crushed peas with the fish and chips (6.5/10).

Hangers and mash
($168) - A simple British style homemade sausages with mashed potatoes and onion gravy. Thought the sausages were a little chewy but the mash rocks (4.5/10)!

Dingley dell pork chops (10oz) with peppercorn sauce ($238) - We knew that Dingley dell pork chops should always be served pink to preserve the silky texture of the meat but being an old fashioned guy, I was still a little worried about the potential health risk. So instead of medium, we especially asked for medium well and I thought that worked out perfectly for us.

The meat itself was undoubtedly tender with the right balance of texture and sweetness but the flavors (largely coming from the peppercorn sauce) were a little disappointing (5/10).

Sticky toffee pudding, muscovado caramel ($88) - I had this for dessert every time I visited Bread Street Kitchen & Bar. Arguably one of my favorite dishes in British cuisine if not THE favorite (7/10).

The menu was designed with sharing in mind but for certain dishes, the portion was so utterly small that we found it a bit difficult to share. This was a real mixed bag for us.
