パーラー わくた (Okinawa, JAPAN) ★★☆☆☆

We've had some really weird ice cream flavors in Japan before. Oyster, squid, sea urchin, fermented soy beans and now we could add bitter melon (also known as bitter gourd) to the list after this trip.

There are many ice-cream parlors in Okinawa that offer the sea salt flavor and a few of them also have bitter melon in their repertoire like パーラー わくた.

パーラー わくた, situated on the busy streets of Kokusaidori (国際通), is right across the street from the famous Yukisio Soft Ice Cream Shop (near the corner of Kencho-mae Dori and Kokusaidori).

Simply look for this particular sign next to the shop.

Here's our bitter melon ice-cream (¥350). I thought the texture was more like a sorbet and it tasted a bit like cucumber with some bitter melon puree. All in all, it's just weird!
