Fukugiya Baum Factory (Okinawa, JAPAN) ★★☆☆☆

The origins of baumkuchen, a traditional German cake, can be traced back to the late 1500's and although there are different stories about where it's invented, one thing remains certain - it is now one of the most popular cakes in Japan.

Juchheim is highly regarded as the company who brought this popular dessert to Japan and their outlets can be found everywhere including Hong Kong these days. On the busy streets of Kokusai (国際通) in Okinawa, we found a different cake shop that specializes in baumkuchen by the name of Fukugiya Baum Factory (ふくぎや).

At Fukugiya Baum Factory, there's a semi-open kitchen where we can see how their multi-layered "tree" cake is freshly made.

Fukugiya's baumkuchen is a product of some of the best Okinawan ingredients. Through this window, their chef can be seen applying honey and brown sugar to different rolls of cakes before sending them into their oven.

Cakes are available in three different sizes (“S”, “M”, and “L”). There are also various flavors available including the most coveted Beni-imo (purple sweet potato).

This massive Beni-imo flavored baumkuchen cost ¥1,400 plus tax. Not particularly cheap but it's one of the bigger sellers here especially for tourists.

I thought the taste was just so-so especially the frosting around the cake. Just made it a little weird.
