Ya Kun Coffee & Kaya Toast (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Founded in 1944, Ya Kun Coffee and Kaya Toast has captured the hearts (and stomaches) of many Asians for more than half a decade. Whenever I go to Singapore, I make sure that I get at least a few slices of their tasty kaya toast before I leave. But news broke this April that Ya Kun has finally decided to open this first outpost in Hong Kong and we have been on our toes waiting for the opening dates ever since. And finally I got an email invitation to their grand opening in late May.

I haven't attended a blogger event for a few months now but it's Ya Kun. There's no way I would turn this one down.

Replacing Delifrance at the corner of Prat and Chatham Road, Ya Kun is finally ready for prime time. According to their management team, they thought about opening in Hong Kong 2-3 years ago but eventually decided that the timing wasn't right.

It was until most recently, when they have built up a wider variety of drinks and dishes, that they finally realized they would be fully equipped for this competitive market.

Of course, leading the charge would be the legendary Ya Kun kaya butter toast and it was perfect as usual.

The Ya Kun iced milk T'eh, another house specialty here, is the perfect complement to the kaya toast.

I didn't realize that they have this steamed bread in Singapore. White moist buns going with the warm fragrant kaya and a cold slab of melting butter, that was nice.

Kaya balls - too bad they only had it for display today. Would love to try one.

We all tried a number of their dishes apart from the kaya bread and toast. First up was the curry laksa.

and Malaysian mee rebus...this was a pleasant surprise.

Beef balls kway teow soup. Average.

Singapore chicken rice. Very average.

We were offered a personalized lecture on making our own milk T'eh. I even went as far as getting behind that counter and making my first-ever milk tea myself.

Look at that. Not bad right?

The kaya toast is out of the world but more finesse is required for the rest of the dishes.
