Din Tai Fung (Taipei, TAIWAN) ★★★★☆

Now that the famous xiao long bao chain, Din Tai Fung, has expanded to Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia, we finally don't need to fly all the way to Taipei just to satisfy our craving for their tasty steam buns and dumplings.

But every time we visit Taipei, we still find it difficult not to drop by for a quick meal despite the usual long lineup. I guess the taste of originality is too good to turn down after all.

While we patiently waited in the long lineup, we spared a little bit of time checking out the chefs who were preparing the xiao long baos behind the scene in the open kitchen.

Couldn't help but notice some of the photos posted on the glass window showing Mr. Tom Cruise making his own xiao long bao in the very same kitchen years ago!

Shaoshing wine marinated chicken, 8.5/10
For anyone visiting Din Tai Fung for the first time, the Shaoshing wine marinated chicken is a must try for sure.

We had our share of chicken marinated with hua diao wine before but this particular brand of Shaoshing wine tasted a lot sweeter than any one we have ever tried.

Each slice of chicken was perfectly tender and flavorful. The sweetness coming from the Shaoshing wine brought another dimension to the delicious chicken meat. I especially enjoyed the chicken skin which was full of this wonderful wine flavor and it actually felt like having pig's ears. A bit gelatinous and crunchy but not too chewy!

Pork Xiao Long Bao, 9/10
They have all kinds of Xiao long bao here, from ones made with chicken to some mixing pork with truffle or crab roe. But as always, we elected to have the basic ones with pork, which we thought was the best.

Looking at these tasty steamed buns in a small bamboo basket, I just couldn't wait any longer. The chicken broth was so hot that it almost burnt my lips but it was too good to resist.

Steamed vegetarian mushroom dumplings, 5/10
As a meat lover, I seldom have vegetarian dumplings but today I decided to give the steamed vegetarian mushroom dumplings a go.

I thought the taste was okay but the texture could have been a little more moist and perhaps more mushroom and less vegetables.

Braised beef noodle soup, 7/10
Another signature dish here is their braised beef noodle soup. I really liked their soup base although the noodles could have a little more bite to it (more al dente!).

Still one of my favorite place to eat in Taipei.
