Kita-no-aisukurīmu Yasan (Otaru, JAPAN) ★★☆☆☆

We have heard of some really funky ice cream flavors out there but Kita-no-aisukurīmu Yasan offers some of the funkiest with a Japanese twist.

Housed in a converted warehouse in a small alley across the street from the famous Otaru canal, this legendary ice-cream parlour is known for some of the most bizarre flavours in town.

Feeling adventurous? If your stomach is up for the challenge, nattō (fermented soybeans), sea urchin, squid, beer and bean curd will be the ideal choices.

Finding Kita-no-aisukurīmu Yasan would prove to be a great challenge. Follow this sign on the main road and walk about 73 steps into the alley (as instructed).

The interior of Kita-no-aisukurīmu Yasan looked more like a souvenir shop than an ice-cream parlour.

We got ourselves a scoop of sea urchin and nattō each. The nattō flavor was surprisingly refreshing while the sea urchin tasted a little bit weird.

Other funky flavors we have heard of before (such as crab, squid-ink and ocean collagen) were nowhere to be found.

Good luck finding Kita-no-aisukurīmu Yasan!
